According to the announcement from the Environmental Protection Administration, starting from August 2023, eight types of establishments, including government departments, public/private schools, department stores, shopping malls, hypermarkets, supermarkets, chain convenience stores, and fast-food outlets with physical storefronts, will comprehensively cease providing single-use plastic tableware (including biodegradable plastic tableware).
According to the amended 'Restrictions on the Use and Implementation of Disposable Tableware,' starting from August of this year, food service providers in the specified eight locations are prohibited from providing single-use plastic tableware, including PLA biodegradable materials. What is PLA biodegradable tableware, and what alternatives can be sought after its prohibition?
PLA is a type of plastic derived from corn starch, belonging to the category of plastics that cannot be recycled. To facilitate the rapid decomposition of PLA corn starch utensils, specific conditions such as moisture, high temperature, microorganisms, and oxygen are required. Taiwan lacks specialized landfill sites and facilities for biodegradation, so currently, PLA-based items in Taiwan are typically managed through incineration.

In response to the government's plastic reduction policies, TAIR CHU Utensils offers alternatives such as wooden utensils and sugarcane container for food service providers in restricted locations to use as substitutes for both dine-in and take-out utensils.
TAIR CHU introduces wooden utensils, including wooden spoons and forks, made from birch wood. Suitable for consuming ice cream, fruit platters, shaved ice, or cake, these wooden utensils offer a new alternative for food service providers as a substitute for take-out utensils.
Wooden forks and spoons are available not only in bulk packaging but also in options such as individual packaging, utensil sets, or meal kits. These can be wrapped using paper or transparent OPP film to minimize external contact with the utensils, enhancing convenience and providing protection for the end-users during dining. (Customized packaging may have a minimum order quantity).
In addition, regarding containers for serving meals, TAIR CHU also offers plant fiber meal boxes (also known as sugarcane meal boxes), which are made from sugarcane fiber pulp. Unlike traditional bento boxes, this series of paper meal boxes do not have any plastic lining, effectively reducing environmental pollution. Ideal for items like muffins or small cakes, these burger boxes can be used for packaging. They can be customized with logo stickers or stamped with the store's exclusive seal, serving as a promotional tool even for take-out boxes.
